Peru will not allow irregular migration at the border with Chile, Foreign Affairs Minister Hugo de Zela stated on Friday.

Previously, the government official  announced that, in coordination with that country, a Binational Committee on Migration Cooperation has been agreed upon and will begin its work on December 1.

"I want to make it clear that the government's policy is that we will not allow irregular migration. On this, we have a clear and firm position. We do not have the conditions or the capacity to receive more migrants," he stated.

The high-ranking official specified that Peru hosts hundreds of thousands of migrants and does not have the capacity to host more. Therefore, Peruvian migration laws will be applied strictly.

However, the diplomat noted that our country respects humanitarian law and will evaluate the application of these regulations on a case-by-case basis.

Likewise, the Cabinet member reported that Interior Minister Vicente Tiburcio will travel to Tacna this afternoon to directly and personally oversee actions at the border, given the high concentration of migrants in the area.

Binational committee

Minister De Zela announced that, in agreement with Chile, a Binational Committee on Migration Cooperation will be established to address this issue between the two countries.

"We clearly understand the situation our neighboring country is facing; we understand it, we have analyzed it, and, consequently, we made contact with Chilean government authorities a few hours ago, specifically with the Chilean Foreign Affairs Ministry," he stated.

State of emergency

On the domestic front, Minister De Zela said the Council of Ministers will hold an extraordinary meeting this afternoon to approve the declaration of a state of emergency at the border, which will allow the immediate increase of police and military presence in the area.

The diplomat specified that this is not an isolated decision; it is part of a measure announced for the borders by President Jose Jeri and will begin in Tacna region.

Regarding the situation at the border, he indicated that presence in this area is being reinforced to ensure that no irregular entry occurs.

"We have the situation under control; thus, what we hope is that it does not escalate, and we expect that, with cooperation from the Chilean government, there will be no disruption on the road. According to what we have been informed, this is also the stance of the Chilean government," he pointed out.

Betssy Chavez case

"The situation remains exactly the same in the sense that she is an asylum applicant at the Mexican Embassy, and we have already taken a public position on the matter, in that we will submit a proposal before the OAS," he pointed out.
