EU commits US$13.9 million to fight drugs and organized crime in Peru

10:56 | Brussels (Belgium), Jul. 18.

The European Union reaffirmed its commitment to Peru's frontal fight against drug trafficking and organized crime by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), in which it commits €12 million (about US$13.9 million) as budget support.

The signing —between Foreign Affairs Minister Nestor Popolizio and High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini— took place within the framework of EU-CELAC Summit in Brussels held on July 16 and 17.

Through this deal, the EU commits €12 million (about US$13.9 million) —as budget support— to the National Strategy for the Fight against Drugs (ENCLD) and organized crime in Peru.

European Union

Since 2014, the EU has worked with governmental organizations in the professional training of police officers, prosecutors, attorneys, and judges.

More than 2,200 Peruvian officials have been trained and 125 activities have been carried out in Lima and provinces to date, including 11 internships —in Europe— on the fight against illicit drug trafficking.

Also, a new program of institutional coordination with professional schools —aimed at the reform of police officers, judges, and prosecutors' careers— will be launched this year.

Likewise, emphasis will be given to academic exchange with Europe to work on practical cases.

To do so, training programs will include the provision of adequate equipment in order to ensure improved teaching and better coordination efforts against this crime.
