Given the advance of the third COVID-19 wave in Peru and the increase in infections among children under 14 years of age, the
Social Health Insurance System (EsSalud) ordered to devote one tower of the COVID-19 Temporary Attention and Isolation Center —located at the Pan-American Village in Lima's Villa El Salvador district— to pediatric cases.
EsSalud noted that the number of children under 14 years of age infected with coronavirus has doubled in less than a week.
In this regard, it reported that 198 pediatric patients have been hospitalized at the
Pan American Village until January 8 and that 27% of the cases (56 children) were uninsured patients.
Currently, four stories of the Pan American Village are designated for children infected with the virus.
Until yesterday, the seventh tower was occupied by 84 children, each of whom was accompanied by a caregiver.
Carhuapoma explained that the decision to prepare the COVID-19 pediatric tower was an immediate response from EsSalud to the surge in infections among infants.
Likewise, the head of EsSalud recommended that citizens take special care of children as the first day of their vaccination drive approaches.
