Former President Alberto Fujimori passed away on Wednesday afternoon, his daughter Keiko Fujimori has confirmed.

"After a long battle with cancer, our father, Alberto Fujimori, has just departed to meet the Lord. We ask those who loved him to join us in praying for the eternal rest of his soul. Thank you for so much, dad!" she expressed via social media.

The delicate state of health of the former president, who governed between 1990 and 2000, was reported this afternoon.

Relatives and the family doctor Alejandro Aguinaga, as well as Fuerza Popular (Popular Force party) Congresswoman Martha Moyano and former legislators Luz Salgado and Luisa Maria Cuculiza, arrived at Keiko Fujimori's house in Lima's San Borja district.

The Fujimori patriarch moved to his daughter's home following his release from prison.

As is known, the former president was sentenced in 2009 by the Special Criminal Court to 25 years in prison for being considered the indirect perpetrator of the deaths of attendees at a gathering in Lima's Barrios Altos neighborhood (1991) and students from La Cantuta University (1992) —crimes perpetrated by intelligence service agents from the Colina detachment.

The Supreme Court upheld the 25-year sentence in 2010.

Alberto Fujimori had been held at Barbadillo Prison located within the Peruvian National Police (PNP) Special Operations Directorate (Dinoes) facilities in Lima's Ate district since his extradition from Chile in September 2007.
