The
President of the Republic Pedro Castillo is set to travel to Mexico and the United States on Friday, in order to promote a coordinated fight against the COVID-19 pandemic at the multilateral level and foster the economic recovery that will help bridge the social gaps in the South American nation.
On his first overseas trip —scheduled for September 17-22— President Castillo will be accompanied by a delegation of four State ministers: Oscar Maurtua de Romaña (Foreign Affairs), Pedro Francke (Economy and Finance), Roberto Sanchez (Foreign Trade and Tourism), and Hernando Cevallos (Health).
These government officials are due to attend the main bilateral meetings and multilateral events in which the Peruvian Head of State will participate.
Mexico trip
The VI Summit of Heads of State and Government of the
Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) —to be held in Mexico City on September 18— will be the first international event where President Castillo will be present. He will be welcomed by his Mexican counterpart Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.
The summit, which will bring together over 30 countries, is expected to result in the signing of the agreement to establish the Latin American and Caribbean Space Agency and the creation of a CELAC comprehensive disaster response fund.
Also in Mexico, the Peruvian leader will meet with the Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) Alicia Barcena.
U.S. trip
On September 21, the Peruvian top official will be welcomed by
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres in New York, where Mr. Castillo will attend the High-Level General Debate of the 76th General Assembly of the United Nations at the headquarters of such agency.
