Defense Minister highlights cooperation between Peru, U.S.

New Peruvian Defense Minister Jorge Moscoso on Monday highlighted the trust and cooperation relationship existing between Peru and the United States, which is materialized through joint actions undertaken by both Armed Forces.

In this sense, the official thanked the North American Government for the long tradition of cooperation with the Inca country.

Last week, the U.S. Navy hospital ship USNS Comfort (T-AH 20) docked at the Port of Callao on a medical assistance mission to provide free surgeries and medical services to patients from Peru's Health Ministry-run (Minsa) hospitals.

Over 200 doctors and Navy's health personnel provided specialized services such as ophthalmology, general surgery, orthopedic surgery, oral and maxillofacial surgery, plastic surgery, and wound care, among others.

They also gave health assistance to over 5,000 residents of La Perla and La Punta districts in Callao region.

Articulated actions

Likewise, the Peruvian minister recalled the Armed Forces carry out articulated actions with the Health Ministry and other sectors of the Inca country in order to improve the population's quality of life on the coast, highlands, and jungle.

On the other hand, U.S. Ambassador to Peru Krishna R. Urs informed that the Department of Defense —through training, equipment, and exchange programs, as well as actions against drug-trafficking, pro-peace operations and humanitarian aid— has contributed US$122 million to the Andean nation over the last five years.

Furthermore, the diplomat indicated the objective of USNS Comfort is to provide humanitarian aid and health services to partner nations of the region.

Remarks were made during the closing ceremony of "Operation Brotherhood."

On the occasion, they were joined by Health Minister Zulema Tomas, Lima Mayor Jorge Muñoz, Venezuelan Ambassador to Peru Carlos Scull, and Deputy Defense Resources Minister Gonzalo Rios.

Navy Chief of Staff Vice Admiral Manuel Vascones, U.S. Navy Captain Brian Diebold, and U.S. Navy Captain Kevin D. Buckley, among other civil and military authorities, were present at the event as well.
