The construction sector expanded 18% last August over to the same month in 2019 —prior to the COVID-19 pandemic— and it did so by 25.5% compared to August 2020, the Central Reserve Bank (BCR) reported on Friday.

The issuing entity pointed out that these results are due to increased self-build activity, as well as the resumption of both private and public projects.

Domestic cement consumption increased 17.4% in August over the same month in 2019 —a rate similar to that observed in July mainly due to the resumption of public and private works.

This variable —an indicator of the construction sector— grew 15.4% in August 2021 compared to the same month in 2020.

On the other hand, the progress of public works rose by 21.7% over the same month of 2019 and expanded 93.9% compared to August a year ago.

The BCR explained that —in seasonally adjusted terms excluding all seasonal factors— the construction sector decreased by 0.6% compared to July, although it remains above the pre-pandemic level.
