World Population Day: Life expectancy of Peruvians is 76.9 years

10:33 | Lima, Jul. 11.

The Peruvian population exceeded 32.6 million inhabitants in 2020 and life expectancy climbed to 76.9 years on average, which means an increase of 11 years in the last three decades, according to a report released on the occasion of the World Population Day —based on information from the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI).

Peru is the fourth most populous country in Latin America —after Brazil, Colombia and Argentina— and projections show that in 2021 —when the nation's Impendence Bicentennial is celebrated— it will reach 33 million inhabitants, according to the bulletin issued by INEI.

One of the factors —by which life expectancy improved in the country— is the drop in infant mortality rate, given that the death of 87.9 newborns per each 1,000 registered in 1980 was reduced to 12.6 deaths per each 1,000 this year due to better medical services.

On the other hand, the global fertility rate fell from 7 children on average in 1950 to 2.2 children per woman in 2020.

The composition of the population by age groups is made up of those aged between 15 and 59 (66%), followed by those under 15 years of age (24.9%), and senior citizens over 60 years of age (9%).

Situation of Peruvians

In Peru, there are 25 million people of working age. However, the economically active population (EAP) is made up of 17.9 million people, as the rest are full-time students, housewives, retirees, sick and people with disabilities.
