WEF: Vice-President calls on businesspeople to invest in Peru

The Vice-President of the Republic Dina Boluarte participates in the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting taking place in the Swiss city of Davos, where she on Tuesday stressed that the Peruvian Government has set policies for inclusion and fight against poverty, as well as gives confidence to investors, in order to achieve economic and social development.

"The Ministry of Development and Social Inclusion (Midis), through its social programs, brings State services closer to the most vulnerable people," Mrs. Boluarte expressed.

"These are the policies of President Pedro Castillo's administration, which he has put at the service of the Peruvian population, so that it becomes an inclusive and equitable government with a humane face," she explained.

The also Midis head pointed out that the COVID-19 pandemic has affected 30% of the population that is in situation of poverty or extreme poverty. Therefore, Midis provides the Yanapay Peru economic support, which benefits 13.5 million people.

Likewise, the official highlighted that Midis' Qali Warma program provides school meals to more 4 million students, in addition to delivering food baskets to more than 243,000 people in vulnerable situation, who attend community kitchens to receive meals. 

Furthermore, Mrs. Boluarte highlighted the work of the PAIS program, through the Itinerant Social Action Platforms (PIAS) –made up of ships and aircraft– and 477 Tambos, which bring State services closer to citizens most in need and remote populations, with the aim of improving their quality of life.

Attracting investments 

The dignitary stressed that, despite the COVID-19 pandemic, Peru's economy grew 13.5% during 2021, adding that it has grown 3.8% in the first quarter of 2022 over last year.

These results reflect the responsible management by the Government towards achieving stability that provides investors with confidence and clear rules for legal certainty.

In this sense, she called on the business community to invest in Peruvian productive sectors, such as the massive natural gas, the industrial development based on lithium in southern Andean Puno region, and agriculture.
 
To ensure that the State is efficient, Minister Boluarte reported that the Government is in the process of removing bureaucratic procedures that trigger labor informality. Thus, administrative simplification and digitalization of processes will be carried out to lead Peru towards sustainable growth.

The Vice-President participated in the presidential panel together with Presidents Rodrigo Chaves (Costa Rica), Ivan Duque (Colombia), and Luis Abinader (the Dominican Republic). The event was moderated by Marisol Argueta, WEF's Head of the Regional Agenda in Latin America.


The South American country's delegation began its participation at the WEF assembly together with numerous Heads of State, businesspeople, and academics, to discuss economic recovery, climate change, new technologies, and the future of work.
