On behalf of the United States and the American people, State Secretary Antony Blinken has sent best wishes to the people of Peru as the South American nation celebrates the 200th anniversary of its independence.

"The values we share and our commitment to democracy, equitable economic growth, respect for diversity, educational opportunity, and security have sustained our strong partnership across generations," Blinken expressed in a press statement issued on July 28.

"We remain committed to working with Peruvians on our common goals. We congratulate Peruvians on your recent elections, an exemplary democratic process.  We welcome Peru's staunch defense of the principles embodied in the Inter-American Democratic Charter, your offering of safe haven to Venezuelan migrants and refugees in Peru, and your leadership in promoting a peaceful return to democracy in Venezuela," he stressed.

"We look forward to continuing to work with you to strengthen environmental protections and tackle the climate crisis. The United States and Peru will continue to work together to promote economic prosperity, combating corruption, defending human rights, and advancing security cooperation," Blinken added.

"The United States wishes the people of Peru a happy Independence Day," he concluded.
