The United States and Peru ratified a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Environmental Protection, the U.S. Embassy in Lima reported on Wednesday.

The memorandum —signed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Peru's Environmental Assessment and Enforcement Agency (OEFA) aims to continue and strengthen cooperation in environmental compliance and inspection.

The signing of the document took place as part of the visit to Peru by Assistant Administrator for EPA's Office of International and Tribal Affairs (OITA), Jane Nishida.

Deputy Administrator Nishida mentioned that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency looks forward to continuing the partnership with the OEFA and working together to fulfill shared goals —particularly for vulnerable communities in both countries.

Cooperation areas include the promotion of efficient environmental supervision that includes native, indigenous, Afro-Peruvian communities, and vulnerable populations; the use of advanced technologies for environmental monitoring and innovative strategies to ensure compliance with environmental regulations; among others.

Similarly, the memorandum represents a mutual commitment to protect the environment and promote sustainable development for the benefit of both nations.

Through this cooperation, both countries seek to strengthen environmental management and compliance with environmental laws in Peru and the United States, contributing to the protection of human health and the natural environment.
