Uruguay to make asylum decision after receiving Peru's information on ex-President

13:38 | Lima, Nov. 19.

The Uruguayan Presidency on Monday informed it will make a decision concerning former President Alan Garcia's asylum request once it has received information on the case from the Peruvian Government.

In a statement, the Uruguayan Government indicated the Inca country's President Martin Vizcarra spoke with his counterpart Tabare Vazquez over the phone —last Sunday— regarding the asylum request.

"In the said conversation it was agreed that Peru's Government will send, as soon as possible, information concerning this subject. Uruguay's Government will make a decision on the petition, after having received it. Both Foreign Affairs Ministries will be in charge of the process," it reads.

As is known, Brazilian construction giant and corruption-tainted Odebrecht allegedly paid bribes to secure the Lima Metro Line 1 contract during Garcia's presidency (2006-2011).

Last Thursday, investigative journalism site IDL-Reporteros reported Garcia had received US$100,000 from Odebrecht for a lecture in Sao Paulo. He had denied the allegations and said he would stay in the country.

Alan Garcia served as President of Peru between 1985-1990 and 2006-2011.
