UNESCO announces funds to carry out investigation on working conditions of artists in Peru

14:53 | Lima, Apr. 19.

In order to support artists and culture professionals worldwide, the UNESCO-Aschberg Programme has announced it will grant over US$600,000 in funds to 12 countries, including Peru.

The funding aims to support States in their efforts to promote legal and regulatory reforms related to the status of artists and culture professionals, in line with the 2030 Agenda and through the blend of research, training, and technical assistance provided by UNESCO.

According to its website, UNESCO received 108 project proposals following a call in September 2021. Projects were evaluated by independent experts, with priority given to Africa and Small Island Developing States, as well as projects focused on youth and gender equality.

The objective of the winning Peruvian project, proposed by the Ministry of Culture, is to carry out an investigation to collect data on the working conditions of artists in the Peruvian context.

The research will allow the validation of the information collected in the round-table discussions held in 2021 within the framework of the development of a new artist law.

The results of the research will help the Peruvian State better understand the size of the cultural and creative workforce and, based on this, continue to make progress in the implementation of concrete measures to improve the working conditions of artists.

"We feel honored to continue to support the Peruvian State in the process of developing measures to guarantee the full exercise of cultural rights. We have already taken the first steps with the adoption of the 'Recovery Plan for Cultural Industries and the Arts by 2030' and the assistance for the preparation of the new artist law," UNESCO Peru Culture Sector Coordinator Enrique Lopez-Hurtado said.

"This new process will provide necessary information for the country to continue making progress to improve the working conditions of artists," he added.

In addition to Peru, the funding will benefit the following States: Cabo Verde, Costa Rica, Gambia, Indonesia, Madagascar, Mozambique, Palestine, Romania, Seychelles, Tunisia, and Uganda.
