UNDP: Peru shows sustained progress, sound human development

15:04 | Lima, Dec. 10.

Peru has experienced sound human development and shows worth noting sustained progress, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative Maria del Carmen Sacasa said on Tuesday.

"Without a doubt, Peru is working so that no one is left behind. It has experienced solid human development with an increase in life expectancy of more than 30 years," she said.

In her speech, during the presentation of the Human Development Report 2019, Sacasa noted that the Andean nation ranks 82nd out of 189 countries due to an increase in life expectancy, above China, which is surprising and positive.

"Life expectancy has increased by 10.4 years, and the average schooling by 2.6 years. As for gender equality, Peru is placed 87th out of 162 countries," Sacasa stated.

"Progress in the country must be deemed sustained. It reflects the collective effort of all social actors, mainly of authorities, civil society, private sector, academia, and citizens," she added.

The UNDP representative stressed that vulnerable populations in Peru are finding opportunities to work, be more creative, and have more aspirations, different from those they had.

"We have to look for mechanisms to accelerate human development, those that enable real transformation of peoples," she expressed.
