United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix has expressed gratitude to Peru over its strong support for peacekeeping operations, as well as for the service and sacrifice of its uniformed personnel deployed around the world under the UN flag.

He recalled that Peru had first provided the United Nations with peacekeeping forces personnel when it deployed troops to Lebanon back in 1958, and has been a constant contributor ever since.

Currently, Peru provides 270 uniformed personnel, including 38 women, to five UN peacekeeping operations. It makes the South American country the 48th largest contributor of personnel to peacekeeping operations.

The largest contribution of peacekeepers from Peru is to the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA), where 255 Blue Helmets serve —including women and men. The vast majority work for the Peruvian Engineering Company, which performs construction and maintenance works.

"The invaluable work of engineers to repair and build roads, as well as bridges, not only allows the mission to perform entrusted activities, but also has a tangible impact on the lives of local communities by boosting trade and allowing people from remote locations to access health care (services) and build relationships among them," the Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations specified.

"The United Nations appreciates the service and sacrifice of Peruvian men and women who have served in dangerous and difficult environments. Members of Peruvian peacekeeping forces have proven a high level of professionalism and dedication wherever they serve. We are deeply grateful for their continued service," Lacroix expressed.

"The United Nations will never forget the sacrifice of eight Peruvian peacekeepers who lost their lives while serving under the UN flag since 1958," he added.

Peru supports the Secretary-General's Action for Peacekeeping (A4P) initiative, which aims to refocus peacekeeping with more specific mandates, make operations stronger and more secure, and mobilize support for political solutions, as well as better equipped and trained forces.
