Tourists visiting the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, in Peru’s south-eastern Cusco region, generate annual revenues of around 100 million soles (US$ 35.9 million), it was reported Monday.
The director of the Archaeological Park Fernando Astete noted the said amount ensures the site’s optimal maintenance and the funding for archaeological studies in the surrounding area.
“The historic sanctuary welcomes on average nearly 2,500 visitors from within the country and abroad per day,” the tourist official told Andina news agency.
With a newly discovered ancestral trail, which is approximately one mile long and around 1.5 yards wide, the Archaeological Park hosts Peru’s 15th century Incan heritage site spreading over 38,000 hectares (almost 95,000 acres).
Currently, one-day ticket at the site is valued at 62 soles (US$26) for domestic visitors, while foreign tourists are required to pay 124 soles (US$50) each. Likewise, there are numerous promotions available for locals and public schools.
In addition, Astete pointed out the number of travelers visiting the Inca fortress is expected to reach its peak in the coming days due to the June festivities to be held in Cusco.
"Nearly 75,000 visitors will probably flock [to Cusco] during the traditional Corpus Christi festival,” he noted.
Located 120 kilometers (74.5 miles) northwest of Cusco, Machu Picchu is one of South America's major travel destinations recognized by Unesco as a Cultural and Natural World Heritage.
