The Lima 2019 Parapan American Games —to be held from August 22 to September 1— will be the biggest edition of the Games yet. A record number of sports and athletes will feature during the 11 days of competition.

Here are some brief facts and figures about the Games.

50,000 - Capacity of Lima National Stadium, set to host the Parapan American Games Opening Ceremony on August 23.

1999 - Year the first Parapan American Games were held, in Mexico City, with four sports represented on the program.

1948 - Year the first competition for wheelchair athletes was held, in Buckinghamshire, England. German neurologist Sir Ludwig Guttmann organized the event, with British World War II veterans taking part.

1,850 - Athletes competing at the Lima 2019 Parapan American Games.

1,000 - Designs presented for the official mascot of the Lima 2019 Pan American and Parapan American Games, with winner Milco receiving 19,895 votes (almost half the total of 44,514 votes).

257 - Medals won by Brazil at Toronto 2015, which made it the most successful nation at the fifth edition of the Games. Brazil’s best performance until then was at Rio de Janeiro 2007 where the host nation won a total of 228 medals.

122 - Centimeters, the width of a running track lane at Athletics Stadium, which is equivalent to the height of an emperor penguin.

40 - Years ago that Carinito, the unofficial anthem of the Games, became a hit across South America.

10 - World records broken at Toronto 2015.

3 - New sports added to the Parapan American program since the 2015 edition of the Games. They are badminton, shooting and taekwondo, while archery has been taken off the list.

2 - Countries that won their first Parapan American Games medal at Toronto 2015. They are Bermuda and Nicaragua.
