Peru's PM calls on Andean countries to act in coordination against transnational crime

14:54 | Lima, Jan. 21.

Peruvian Prime Minister Alberto Otarola on Sunday participated in the inauguration of the 24th Extraordinary Meeting of the Andean Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs, together with ministers and authorities in charge of internal security.

During his speech, the Cabinet chief stressed that transnational organized crime is a threat to internal security of States, to democratic institutions, and to sustainable and inclusive development of peoples.

"This reality forces us to act in coordination. There is no safe country if its neighbor suffers from the senseless assault of these groups," he said, noting that this problem must be tackled forcefully.

The event included the participation of delegations from Bolivia, including Government Minister Eduardo Del Castillo and Deputy Foreign Trade and Integration Minister Benjamin Blanco; and from Colombia, including Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Jose Coy and Deputy Defense and Security Policies Minister Daniela Gomez Rivas.

The session also featured members of the Ecuadorian delegation, including Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility Minister Gabriela Sommerfeld, Defense Minister Gian Carlo Loffredo, as well as Government and Interior Minister Monica Palencia.

The Prime Minister reiterated the Peruvian Government's solidarity with the Republic of Ecuador, and expressed confidence that the convened meeting will lead to the adoption of pertinent measures that contribute to national, regional, and global efforts in the fight against transnational organized crime.

Likewise, he thanked the Government of the Plurinational State of Bolivia —in its capacity as Pro-Tempore Presidency of the Andean Community and the organization's General Secretariat— for immediately addressing Peru's proposal to convene this extraordinary meeting.
