on Monday evening announced that a Sputnik V COVID-19 vaccine production plant will be installed in Peru.
"The decision to install a Sputnik V vaccine production plant in the country has been coordinated as a result of the negotiations between the Governments of Peru and Russia," he said in a recent Address to the Nation.
Sputnik V is the first registered vaccine against COVID-19 in the world. It is based on safe and effective platform of human adenoviral vectors and has been approved for use in 70 countries with a total population of 4 billion people.
This vaccine was named after the world's first satellite, launched by the Soviet Union, and is 97.6% effective against COVID-19.
Moreover, the top official explained that the Government has decided to allocate an additional S/2.89 billion (about US$795.3 million) for the implementation of a plan to face the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to the Peruvian leader, such resources will serve to finance cross-cutting and specific initiatives.
Mr. Castillo remarked that the Government is aware that economic recovery is not possible without vaccination. Therefore, the arrival of COVID-19 jabs is being expedited by increasing the number of doses from Pfizer and Sinopharm laboratories.
