President calls on researchers abroad to work for Peru

The President of the Republic Pedro Castillo on Tuesday called on Peruvian researchers who have been developing activities abroad to return to the country and work for the development of Peru.

Mr. Castillo inaugurated the Southern Volcanological Observatory facilities in Sachaca district, Arequipa.

In his speech, the Head of State highlighted the implementation of this center aimed at promoting disaster prevention management and protection of populations' lives. Therefore, he called for the establishment of one similar center in each Peruvian region.

"From here I call on researchers, scientists, universities, and students to sit down and focus on the country, to believe in the people who stand up for Peru," Mr. Castillo expressed.

"(...) I found proposals from embassies of other countries regarding Peruvian compatriots who are contributing to Latin America, and from this space, through this work, we want to get and bring them back so that once and for all they can contribute to development," he added.

In this sense, the top official urged Environment Minister Modesto Montoya to make the decision to form a real team that is in contact with these specialists who are abroad in order to form the Ministry of Science and Technology.

"I am sure that Congress looks at the country and sees this reality," he said, adding that a proposal for the creation of the Ministry is in the hands of the Legislative Branch.

Moreover, the top official highlighted the inauguration of the Southern Volcanological Observatory, indicating that progress can be made if there is unity.

"This observatory will save lives, as well as guarantee prevention and care for the population," he added.

Lastly, Mr. Castillo called on the Geophysical Institute of Peru to design a regional map so as to prevent disasters or phenomena such as floods or El Niño.
