on Sunday stated that "in Gaza, children, families, and the elderly are being driven to hunger," during the Regina Coeli prayer following the Mass at St. Peter's Square marking the beginning of his Pontificate.
"We cannot forget our brothers and sisters who suffer because of wars. In Gaza, children, families, the elderly, and survivors," said the Supreme Pontiff before more than 150,000 people gathered at the Vatican and surrounding areas to witness the start of his papacy.
A week ago, after being elected on May 8, the Pope called for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
Similarly, Leo XIV advocated for humanitarian aid to be provided to the exhausted population.
He also demanded the freedom of all Israeli hostages, during remarks from the central balcony of St. Peter's Basilica following the Regina Coeli prayer.
"I am deeply hurt by what is happening in the Gaza Strip," the Supreme Pontiff stated.
His Holiness demanded "that the fire cease immediately," that aid be provided to the civilian population, and that "all" hostages be released.
