PM praises APEC hosting in Peru

08:08 | Lima, Nov. 22.

Prime Minister Gustavo Adrianzen pointed out that hosting the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in Peru enabled member economies to discover a stable country that offers security and is particularly attractive in sectors such as mining, agribusiness, fisheries, trade, and tourism.

"Two state visits, with Brunei Darussalam and the People's Republic of China, along with five official visits, demonstrate that there have been economies which have specifically come to show concern for Peru," Adrianzen highlighted.

Within this framework, the Cabinet chief emphasized the unity of Peruvians during APEC Economic Leaders' Week.

"Beyond soccer, Peru also unites for common causes, and this forum has shown that we can all converge in a single direction," he remarked.

Strengthening Peru-China Relationship

Likewise, Adrianzen mentioned that the Chancay Multipurpose Port Terminal is a project of great regional significance, to which the Ports of El Callao, Marcona, Matarani, Paita, and others will be added.

"We will have a very dynamic coastline and port policy," he remarked.

When asked by the foreign press about China's strong presence in Peru through the Chancay Megaport, the Cabinet chief clarified that the newly-inaugurated infrastructure is solely for civil use.

He added that the waters remain sovereign territory of the Peruvian state.

U.S. Expectations for working with Peru

The Prime Minister highlighted the great expectations the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has for working with Peru on the digital democratization process, the fight against lead in food and water, and security issues.

"In May 2026, we will commemorate 200 years of diplomatic relations with the United States, and it is probably one of the oldest relationships Peru has as a republic," he emphasized.
