Peruvian wins WE Empower UN SDG Challenge

14:53 | Lima, Oct. 4.

Peruvian entrepreneur and Wasi Organics founder Marta del Rio has been selected as one of the five awardees of the inaugural WE Empower U.N. Sustainable Development Goals Challenge.

Five female entrepreneurs representing each of the five U.N. regions were selected to attend the U.N. Global Goals Week in September and to receive training and support for their efforts to empower women and improve sustainability in their fields.

The awardees rely on businesses in different sectors such as sustainable energy or even agriculture but have something in common: innovative ideas.

Marta del Rio was selected as the Latin America and Caribbean winner for co-founding organic snack company Wasi Organics to fight poverty and transform Peruvian agriculture, providing training and technical assistance to smallholder farmers and sourcing ingredients from them at a fair price.

The five winners received an all expenses paid trip in order to participate in special events during the UN Global Goals Week held in New York, on September 24-29.

Amanda Ellis —Senior Special Advisor for International Diplomacy, Sustainable Development, and Inclusion at Julie Ann Wrigley Global Institute of Sustainability— explained the award was the outcome of a business competition for women entrepreneurs who are advancing the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
