Mariana Costa Checa, founder and CEO at
Laboratoria —an organization that trains low-income women to integrate them into the digital sector— has been included by
DC Comics in the comic book titled "Wonderful Women of the World."
Through Laboratoria, the 35-year-old businesswoman and her team train women in areas such as software development and user experience design and, then, connect them with job opportunities.
The project started accepting 15 students and now it is present in Chile, Mexico, and Brazil.
"More women working in technology also implies more women building the future of our Latin America. We will continue working to be thousands more," she wrote on social media.
She also noted that this achievement is the result of years of teamwork, the strength and talent of thousands of women who went through the bootcamp, the commitment of companies that have employed their graduates, as well as the support of donors, mentors, and friends who accompanied her along the way.
On the DC Comics blog, journalist Mandy Curtis wrote that she particularly enjoyed learning about Mariana Costa Checa and Ellen Ochoa, two women who spoke to her passions both present and past.
"Checa is the co-founder of a tech incubator in Latin America that helps women learn career skills and get placed in technology jobs they might otherwise have been passed over for. I have worked with similar groups here in the U.S. and I am always proud to see the passion and drive the women involved have!" she said.
Wonderful Women of the World includes tales of the real-world heroes who take up the mantle of Diana of Themyscira and work in the fields of science, social justice activism, diplomacy, and more.
