Peruvian exports have hit a record high of US$56.241 billion in 2021, an increase of 35% compared to 2020, the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) has reported.

"They have even exceeded pre-pandemic figures. Peruvian shipments benefited from the recovery of local production and higher international prices," Mincetur stated.

According to the government agency, when including 2021 imports, which amounted to US$46.438 billion (up by 37.2%), Peruvian foreign trade totals US$102.679 billion, the highest historical value, up by 36% and 19% compared to 2020 and 2019, respectively.

Thus, Peru's (foreign trade) growth rates are higher than those of Latin America and the world, and its trade surplus is US$9.803 billion.

"This milestone for the foreign trade sector is possible thanks to the push from exporters, farmers, workers, stevedores, and all those who participate in the export chain," said the head of Mincetur, Roberto Sanchez.

"They have shown their resilience, which today makes us one of the strongest sectors, thus providing great benefits across the country," he added.

In 2021, the number of exporters reached 8,573, 68% of which were micro, small and medium-sized companies.

In light of this, Minister Sanchez reiterated Mincetur's commitment to continue working hand in hand with micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), producer associations, and cooperatives to strengthen export capacities, open new markets, and spread the benefits of international trade agreements.

It should be noted that Peruvian products reached 170 markets. The main destinations were China (accounting for 33% of the total), the United States (13%), the European Union (12%), South Korea (5%), and Canada (5%).
