Peruvian coffee reaches 44 int'l markets, exports total over 3.5 million bags in 2020

17:58 | Lima, May. 16.

Peru cemented its position as one of the main coffee exporters in the world last year, reaching 44 international markets, which were attracted by the quality and aroma of the varieties from the coffee-growing areas in this country.

As reported by the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri), exports remained stable in 2020 at 3.5 million bags, thanks to the great potential of Peruvian coffee and concerted efforts of various sectors in the value chain.

The top destinations for Peruvian coffee exports were markets in Europe and the United States.

In this sense and with the aim of strengthening the coffee chain at the national level, Midagri established the National Executive Coffee Council —a permanent multisectoral commission that leads joint efforts to promote sustainable and competitive development of Peruvian coffee.

The multisectoral commission —with the participation of various representatives of the national coffee industry— commenced its duties, whose main objective is to monitor the implementation of the National Plan of Action for Peruvian Coffee 2019-2030, as well as open dialogue to agree on measures in favor of the sustainable development of this product, for the benefit of 223,000 families depending on such crop.

Moreover, this multisectoral commission is entitled to propose the measures for the development of the Peruvian coffee growing, providing a space for dialogue and coordination between institutions and entities involved in the coffee value chain.

This commission is made up of a representative of Midagri, who presides over it; a representative of the Ministries of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Production, Environment, and Foreign Relations; a representative of the National Commission for Development and Life without Drugs (Devida); and a representative of the National Assembly of Regional Governors (ANGR).

In addition, it is composed of a representative of the Association of Municipalities of Peru; two delegates from the National Coffee Board; two from the Peruvian Coffee Chamber; one from the National Federation of Coffee Growers and Farmers of Peru; and one from the Association of Peruvian Exporters (Adex).
