Peru's Prosecutor: Nothing is pending on Alejandro Toledo's extradition

15:13 | Lima, May. 10.

Superior Coordinating Prosecutor for Money Laundering Rafael Vela on Tuesday affirmed that nothing is pending regarding the extradition of ex-President Alejandro Toledo (2001-2006).

In fact, Vela emphasized that everything is in the hands of the United States Department of Justice now.

In this regard, the prosecutor explained that the former president is litigating against the judge who certified his extradition and no longer against U.S. authorities, who endorsed the request of the Peruvian Prosecutor's Office.

"We estimate that U.S. authorities will make a decision in the very near future, because I think the legal part of the analysis cannot be reversed," he told Exitosa radio and TV station.

Likewise, Vela remarked that Toledo may appeal the recent decision of a California judge, who rejected the habeas corpus filed by his defense so as to prevent his extradition.

On the other hand, regarding the effective collaboration agreement entered into with Odebrecht, he said it is expected to return to normal in the prosecution against former President Ollanta Humala, within the framework of the Lava Jato case.

The superior prosecutor noted that although Brazilian entrepreneurs Jorge Barata, Marcelo Odebrecht, and Luiz Mameri cannot come to Peru to testify within the framework of this process, testimony can be taken via videoconference.

Vela remarked that the aim is to shorten the deadlines, noting that judges with exclusive competence are expected to speed up the content control procedure of the accusation and future prosecutions.

As is known, Toledo is being investigated by Peruvian authorities for allegedly having received up to US$35 million from Odebrecht in exchange for favoring the Brazilian company in its business in his country of origin, while he was still President of the Republic.
