Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Sunday visited the first specilized Molecular Biology Laboratory of the Social Health Insurance System (EsSalud) —housed at Edgardo Rebagliati Martins Hospital— which is exclusively designed and accredited for the detection of COVID-19 infection.

As part of the Government's efforts to strengthen the services delivered by the State in order to tackle the health emergency, the implementation of this laboratory will expand the supply of molecular tests, as well as provide a timely diagnosis and treatment for patients.

The Molecular Biology Laboratory at Rebagliati Hospital will initially process 1,000 tests a day, and the aim is to ramp this up to 2,000 daily. It will become operational in the following days.

After the Molecular Laboratory at the National Health Institute (INS), this would be the second largest laboratory —in terms of capacity— across the country.
