The President of the Republic Francisco Sagasti on Monday morning participated in the promulgation of a rule that amends the Criminal Code, the Criminal Procedure Code, and Law No. 28950 against Human Trafficking and Smuggling of Migrants.

Articles referring to the crimes of human trafficking and exploitation are systematized by means of this law, as they are considered as crimes against human dignity.

The ceremony took place at the Government Palace in Lima and included the participation of Prime Minister Violeta Bermudez, as well as Women and Vulnerable Populations Minister Silvia Loli.

In addition, it was virtually attended by Judicial Branch Chair Elvia Barrios, Attorney General Zoraida Avalos, and Congress Chairwoman Mirtha Vasquez.

The Head of State affirmed that this rule constitutes an important achievement of society that Congress knew how to channel, with the support of public institutions.

He remarked that the regulation systematizes crimes and seeks an adequate compensation to the victims, which are mostly girls, teenagers, and women.

"I call on branches of government, public institutions, civil society, and professional associations to join efforts —in a coordinated manner— to eradicate human trafficking and the exploitation of human beings," he pointed out.

"This rule is an important step forward," the Peruvian leader insisted.
