The President of the Republic Dina Boluarte is participating in the ceremony marking the 202nd anniversary of the Peruvian Navy —the day on which the 144th anniversary of the Naval Battle of Angamos is also commemorated.

The event, which takes place at Plaza Grau Square in Callao, began with a minute of silence in honor of the officers who died in service during the Battle of Angamos on 8 October 1879.

The Executive Branch recognized the heroic deed of Miguel Grau during the Battle of Angamos, which is commemorated on the same day of the 202nd anniversary of the Peruvian Navy.

Congress, the Ministry of Defense, and the Joint Command of the Armed Forces joined the greetings.

The Navy was founded on October 8, 1821 —the year of Peruvian Independence.

For its part, the Battle of Angamos took place on October 8, 1879.

On that date, a group of men (crew members of the Huascar ironclad) commanded by the Grand Admiral of Peru, Miguel Grau, were protagonists of one of the most memorable and glorious naval battles in the maritime history of nations.

This battle concluded with the death of Grau —also known as the Knight of the Seas.
