The President of the Republic Pedro Castillo on Sunday affirmed that the Government is providing immediate support to the population affected by the strong quake that hit Amazonas region.

According to the Head of State, the necessary aid will be allocated to reconstruct the houses. In addition, food and tents will be provided in various areas damaged by this seismic event.

During his visit to La Jalca Grande district in Amazonas region, Mr. Castillo noted that unity and work of authorities are necessary at this moment, so that they (the authorities) allocate the required budget for the reconstruction of houses.

"Rest assured that, starting today, we will immediately reach you through the government ministries. I urge the National Civil Defense Institute (Indeci) and State ministers to help so that tents and homes are set up, in coordination with the population and mayors," the President said as he addressed the population.

In this regard, he urged those affected to register for aid, so that they are provided with food, blankets, and their homes can be rebuilt, since this is the responsibility of the Government.

The country's top official explained that State ministries and the decentralized bodies of the Central Government will assist the quake-stricken population.

In addition, the President asked citizens not to return to damaged houses, since aftershocks can further damage weakened structures and threaten their integrity.

The seismic event occurred at 05:52 a.m. (local time) at a depth of 131 km and its epicenter was located 98 km east of the town of Santa Maria de Nieva, in Nieva district (Condorcanqui province), near the border with Ecuador.

The quake was felt with intensity VII in Santa Maria de Nieva, as well as in Chachapoyas —the capital of the region. In addition, due to its large magnitude, it was also felt in Peruvian capital Lima and various cities across the country.
