The
President of the Republic Dina Boluarte on Thursday announced that the Council of Ministers has passed two urgency decrees that allocate S/1.2 billion (about US$329 million) to take rapid and efficient steps to face an eventual El Niño phenomenon, which may occur in the country.
"I want to announce that we have approved two urgency decrees, which together allocate more than S/1.2 billion (about US$329 million) to take efficient and rapid steps to counter El Niño phenomenon that has been announced by experts," she said.
Mrs. Boluarte explained that the first decree provides measures for the implementation of actions in the regions of Tumbes, Piura, Lambayeque, La Libertad, Ancash, Lima, and Ica, where a state of emergency has been declared.
It will enable the intervention in more than 100 activities such as the cleaning, clearing, and formation of dams, in order to reduce risks and the vulnerability of people in riverside areas, thanks to a transfer of S/225 million (about US$61.7 million).
The dignitary stated that the second decree involves a sum of US$975 million to immediately implement 518 response interventions in the regions of Ancash, Piura, La Libertad, Lambayeque, Lima, and Ica.
Moreover, the country's top official underlined that Piura River will be provided an exit to the sea, which will partially resolve the flooding issue in the city of Piura at times of maximum water levels.
In addition, the President reported that, in Lambayeque, attention will be paid to critical areas near La Leche River; while in La Libertad, the Sausal area alongside Chicama River will be inspected, since it poses a major risk to the population.
On the other hand, inspections will be carried in Tumbes, while in Lima, attention will be paid to various ravines in Chosica and critical points along Rimac River between the districts of Ate and Chaclacayo, among other areas.
