Peru's Prime Minister Violeta Bermudez on Friday asked citizens to avoid crowds that may occur as part of the electoral campaign of political parties participating in the general elections scheduled for April 11, 2021.

After supervising the vaccination of elderly people in Lima's San Martin de Porres district, Bermudez affirmed that the Executive Branch is not entitled to conduct any type of control on the protocols practiced by political groups when they approach the population.

"I take this opportunity to ask everyone to avoid crowds, because we put our lives, and the lives of our loved ones, at risk. We may get infected and be asymptomatic, but we can carry the virus and put their lives at risk," she remarked.

The Cabinet chief emphasized that the competent authorities are the National Elections Board (JNE) and the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE), while the Executive Branch helped prepare the protocols for the electoral campaign.

"We stick to the principle of neutrality in this electoral process, but if crowds of any kind occur, law enforcement authorities shall intervene," she said.

Vaccines

Furthermore, the high-ranking official pointed out that a batch of 300,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine is expected to arrive in April, which has been fully confirmed.

Regarding the Sinopharm vaccine doses, she said a date has not been determined yet because the formalities to grant the conditional health registration —whose process is at an advanced stage— are expected to be completed.

"We cannot lower our guard, we already have the vaccines, but if the population is not fully immunized, we must take further preventive measures, wear face masks, maintain physical distance, as well as opt for ventilated and outdoor locations," she added.
