Peruvian Prime Minister Violeta Bermudez on Wednesday said the indicators over recent weeks proved that —given the reduction in people's mobility in extreme risk areas— a slight slowdown in COVID-19 deaths was registered.

"The rate of virus reproduction continues to decline slowly at the national level since January, going from 1.2 to 1.04. Ideally, it must be less than 1 so that we can be able to sense that the infection rate is decreasing," she expressed.

In this sense, the Cabinet chief indicated that this slight improvement should not be a reason for the population to stop protecting itself from the threat posed by COVID-19.

Therefore, she said, prevention measures must be strengthened so that this slowdown is sustainable, while the vaccination process remains in place nationwide.

"Mobility decreased in extreme risk areas, and in general throughout the country, by an average of 40% (…). The death toll from COVID-19 has been experiencing a slight slowdown," she stressed.

The Prime Minister also requested public and private institutions to keep the remote work modality in force, in addition to the protection measures such as wearing face masks, abiding by physical distance, and washing hands constantly, among others.

Remarks were made during a press conference held at the Government Palace in Lima.
