The Government is neutral towards the current electoral process and guarantees fair and transparent elections for citizens, Peruvian Prime Minister Violeta Bermudez affirmed on Thursday.

While supervising the actions taken by the National Police during Holy Week, she said that the Executive Branch respects the principle of neutrality and refrains from giving opinions on candidates.

The Cabinet chief took the opportunity to inform all citizens that the Transition and Emergency Government has lent all its support to electoral bodies, adding that the support of the Police and Armed Forces is guaranteed for all citizens to cast their vote freely.

"The Executive Branch is neutral towards these elections, and we guarantee their conduct. Therefore, they will be fair and transparent elections," she noted.

Asked about COVID-19 infections, Bermudez stated that, as previously stated by Health Minister Oscar Ugarte, the strain found in Brazil is in Lima, and it is important not to lower the guard on preventive measures.

"The flights from Brazil are restricted and this restriction for the UK, South Africa, and Brazil —to limit the spread of this variant, which has proven to be more contagious— has been extended," she emphasized.

The high-ranking official pointed out that the Executive Branch is taking measures against the pandemic and that primary care is being strengthened in border regions.

In this sense, she reported that face masks will be distributed in remote communities and border regions in the coming days.
