Peru's PM: At this time, it would be inappropriate to return to strict quarantine

13:07 | Lima, Aug. 8.

New Prime Minister Walter Martos on Saturday affirmed that —at this moment— it would be totally inappropriate to return to a strict quarantine, given that the economic reactivation is currently underway in the country.

"Now we need an economic reactivation; if there is no adequate economy, we will not rely on financing to face the (COVID-19) pandemic; therefore, it would be totally inappropriate to return to a totally strict quarantine at this time," he expressed.

Likewise, Martos said that he trusts citizens' sense of responsibility to put into practice measures such as: social distancing, hand washing and wearing face masks.

The high-ranking official reiterated that no strategy will be sufficient if all citizens do not join efforts supported by discipline, prudence and what they have learned in order to protect themselves.

He argued that the Government is currently deploying a comprehensive response against the pandemic by optimizing the response in places where infections are growing, adding that it is supported by early treatment.

The Prime Minister also announced that the Government has a national plan for the supply of medical oxygen, which will be soon announced by Health Minister Pilar Mazzetti.

Asked about his presentation at Congress to request a vote of confidence on August 11, he specified that the fight against COVID-19, the economic reactivation, citizen security and jobs creation will be the main topics in his presentation.
