The
Ministry of Justice and Human Rights (Minjusdh) and the Regional Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) for South America have signed a letter of intent to strengthen technical cooperation between both institutions.
The letter was digitally signed on Wednesday by Peru's Justice and Human Rights Minister of Eduardo Vega and
OHCHR's South America Representative Jan Jarab.
The digital signatures were produced in Lima (Eduardo Vega) and Chile (Jan Jarab).
This agreement seeks to promote the rule of law, the full enforcement of human rights, and the achievement of the
Sustainable Development Goals, in full compliance with the commitments arising from human rights treaties.
On Thursday, Minister Vega noted that the letter strengthens a valuable and relevant technical cooperation relationship, while formalizing a necessary and evident relationship between both institutions.
"The document is, basically, the formalization of a series of activities in which we have received technical support (from OHCHR), especially for the General Directorate of Human Rights," he said.
According to the government official, the six areas that should be prioritized in this first year of cooperation are the difficult action areas, "but those showing the country's evolution and specialization in the defense of fundamental rights."
They include the National Human Rights Plan 2018-2021; the National Action Plan on Business and Human Rights; the National Plan for Memory, Peace, and Reconciliation; the implementation of the recommendations made by the last OHCHR mission; the integration of international standards in penitentiary matters and criminal policy; and support to develop a protection policy for human rights defenders.
