Judiciary Chairwoman Elvia Barrios on Monday expressed support for specialized jurisdictional bodies responsible for corruption cases in the country and for transparency measures in the administration of justice.

Barrios, who took office today as the first Judiciary chairwoman in the history of Peru, affirmed that taking action against both external and internal corruption is a huge challenge for the Judicial Branch.

"Wiping the slate clean is not an option in the fight against corruption. Corruption will be fought through the specialized judicial bodies. We are going to strengthen them, that is why I have asked the National Justice Board (JNJ) to appoint the necessary number of judges," she pointed out.

Additionally, she announced that emphasis will be placed on strengthening the disciplinary control system at the Judiciary, with concrete, measurable, and noticeable actions because corruption undermines institutions, democracy, good governance, the possibility of development, and the trust of citizens.

Immediate measures

Moreover, the Judiciary head announced a set of immediate measures to be promoted in the first six months of her term.

Furthermore, she disclosed that the panic button will be available in the 34 judicial districts to assist victims of family violence and that the Judicial Auction System —currently available in Lima only— will be extended to all courts.

The event —held at the Justice Palace's Vidaurre Hall— marked the opening of the Judicial Year 2021 in Peru.
