The
Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit held in San Francisco, United States, gave the
2023 APEC Bio-Circular-Green Award to the Peruvian business venture "Alinti," the
Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reported.
Alinti was recognized for its contribution to sustainability through the generation of electricity from the photosynthesis of plants.
It should be noted that the Peruvian undertaking is the winner of the micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) category.
In a post on social media, the
Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlighted that this is the first Bio-Circular Green Prize, which recognizes individuals, businesses, and organizations from the Asia-Pacific region that have implemented actions to advance sustainable and inclusive growth in three categories: women; youth; and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
Created by an Ayacucho-born civil engineer, Hernan Asto, Alinti is a device that generates electricity from the photosynthesis of plants, which pass electrons through their roots through photosynthesis.
"These electrons are captured thanks to a microcell and stored in a battery, which is part of the entire equipment (a flowerpot, microcells, plants, and a battery). It all weights 4 kg in total," Asto told
Andina news agency.
Thus, people who have these flowerpots at home can benefit from air purification, since plants not only produce electrons but also eliminate toxic substances, such as benzene and ammoniac, which are harmful to human health.
"Having Alinti at home provides health and quality of life, as it works with all plants that produce energy, thanks to photosynthesis," he noted.
About Alinti
Alinti is accelerating the transition to renewable energy, working to mitigate the major effects of climate change.
Through eight years of research and design, Alinti has developed technology that allows rural communities to generate electricity without the use of batteries.
Instead, Alinti products are powered through the photosynthesis of plants and the reaction of microorganisms in the soil.
With Alinti's clean and affordable products, 2m² of grass can generate up to 25-watt hours of energy that can be used to light up public spaces, charge electronic devices, and power household lamps.
