The Ministry of Energy and Mines (Minem) reported that 18 rural electrification projects were completed in 2023, with a total investment of over S/151 million (about US$40.6 million).

The information was recently confirmed via social media by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers (PCM).

In compliance with the objective set at the beginning of the Government term, to reduce electrical service gaps in rural areas at the national level, Minem reported that 18 rural electrification projects —whose total investment amounted to S/ 151.3 million— were completed last year.

Said projects enabled the electrification of 607 localities and benefited more than 64,000 inhabitants in the regions of Ancash, Ayacucho, Cajamarca, Cusco, Huanuco, Junin, La Libertad, Loreto, Pasco, Piura, and San Martin.

These projects, promoted by the Ministry's General Directorate of Rural Electrification (DGER), made it possible to increase rural electricity coverage nationwide, ensuring continuous and quality electrical service for the benefit of more than 15,000 low-income families in the most remote places across the country.

The works include the "Expansion of electrical distribution networks in the province of Ayabaca" in Piura region, which benefits more than 16,500 inhabitants across 323 communities and entails an investment of more than S/32 million (about US$8.71 million).

Another work that stood out among the rest was the "Comprehensive electrification of the province of Santiago de Chuco" in La Libertad region, which benefits more than 9,500 residents in 129 communities, with an investment of over S/29 million (about US$7.81 million).

Likewise, it is important to note that Minem, through the General Directorate of Rural Electrification (DGER), has been managing the implementation of a portfolio of 118 projects with the aim of achieving 96% of rural electricity coverage by 2026.

These projects represent an investment of S/2.431 billion (about US$654.7 million) and will benefit 908,000 inhabitants of rural areas, as well as isolated and border towns throughout the country.
