The Presidency of the Council of Ministers (PCM) on Wednesday reminded citizens that vaccines against COVID-19 provide protection from contagion of this disease, adding that the one prepared by Sinopharm laboratory is 90% effective.

"The vaccine saves lives! Thousands of Peruvians are protected," the PCM expressed via social media.

In this context, and referring to information from the World Health Organization (WHO), it reaffirmed that Sinopharm vaccine "has achieved 90% effectiveness in other countries."

The day before, Peru's Universidad Cientifica del Sur Research Director Percy Mayta-Tristan said a "campaign" had been developed to question the effectiveness of this drug.

According to Mayta-Tristan, this has hindered the ongoing vaccination campaign, slowing down acquisitions and —based on his calculations— delaying the supply of the vaccine to at least 2 million people.

On April 29, the WHO —through its Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization— published a study. It determined that Sinopharm vaccine offers an effectiveness of 90%, according to studies carried out in Egypt, Jordan, and the United Arab Emirates.
