The Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) and German State-owned development bank Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW) have signed a financial contribution contract worth €20 million (around US$24.41 million), for the conservation of 12 protected natural areas.

These resources come from a donation made by the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany and will be destined to the project "Financial Sustainability for Protected Areas of the northern Amazon Biome."

Economy and Finance Minister Waldo Mendoza indicated that this amount will help improve the protection of biological diversity and the sustainable use of natural resources in 10 protected natural areas under national administration, as well as two regional conservation areas.

The sector's head noted that these areas make a corridor covering 43.9% of the total surface of protected areas in the entire Amazon biome.

The implementation period of the agreement is five years and will allow the Economy and Finance Ministry (MEF) to receive the donation, whose final recipients will be the National Service for Natural Protected Areas (Sernanp) and the Regional Government of Loreto, through a budgetary support agreement.

In addition to the MEF's head, the signing included the participation of Environment Minister Gabriel Quijandria, Sernanp Head Pedro Gamboa, the head of the German Embassy's Development Cooperation Section Florian Theus, and KfW Peru Office Director Simon Erhard.

According to Theus, this agreement marks a milestone in the Peru-German cooperation, since it is an innovative mechanism which is expected to contribute to Peru's efforts to preserve biodiversity through protected areas under effective management.

Step towards sustainability

KfW Peru Office Director Simon Erhard highlighted that the signing of the financial contribution contract —through the budgetary support instrument— marks a very important step towards the sustainability of Natural Protected Areas in Peru, as well as communities whose financial means are based on their resources.
