Economy and Finance Minister Alex Contreras on Sunday affirmed that the subject of monetary resources is not an issue, noting that funds are being injected so that municipalities can cope with the emergency caused by rains.
According to the head of the
Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF), there is a bill in Congress that aims to inject more resources in order to respond to the emergency (caused by rains), but, in the meantime, resources are being reallocated.
In statements to TV Peru, the minister explained that the Government issued a supreme decree last Saturday to mobilize resources from different ministries.
He went on to say that an additional injection (of resources) is expected to be channeled to municipalities (to meet urgent needs) between Sunday and Monday.
For instance, so far this year, Piura's regional government has executed only 11% of its emergency response budget, as is the case of the provincial municipality.
"On average, local governments spend 17% of their budget," the Cabinet member stated.
"However, local governments are expected to have resources available for emergency situations; and they do right now, but we need to make sure. For this reason, a direct transfer will be made between Sunday and Monday, when an urgency decree may be issued," he said.
Contreras also noted that subject of monetary resources is not an issue, but the lack of response by sub-national governments is, and in view of this, more resources are being injected so that municipalities can address the emergency, which, when at level 5, becomes one of the Government's duties.
