Peru's Fin Min: Gov't committed to balancing mining, environment, and social development

Economy and Finance Minister Pedro Francke on Tuesday morning said that the Government led by President Pedro Castillo is committed to achieving a balance among mining, environment, and social development.

"We are committed to achieving a balance among mining, environment, and social development. Our efforts are focused on this. This balance also implies the continuity of the mining activity, which is essential for the development of the country," Francke said on Twitter.

"For this reason, the Government has been undertaking all the necessary efforts together with Cusco region's governor and mayors from Las Bambas area of influence so as to find a dialogue-based solution to the halt of its operations within the framework of the law," reads another tweet.

The minister also called on farming communities in the area of influence of Las Bambas mining project to resume dialogue.

"We call on communities to resume dialogue and avoid any violence. We share the desire to find a balance between mining and social development, which must take place within the framework of the law and under a strict respect for public order," he added.
