Peru's FA Ministry: Gov't maintains firm commitment to freedom of expression

Peruvian Foreign Affairs Minister Cesar Landa has described as positive the meeting that he held with the Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), Pedro Vaca, who is paying a visit to Peru between May 16 and 20.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Vaca will remain in Peru to assess the situation of the right to freedom of opinion and expression in the country.

In this regard, Minister Landa highlighted the Peruvian government's firm commitment to guarantee the right to freedom of expression, in accordance with its international obligations.

He also stressed the government's commitment to strengthening the Inter-American Human Rights System of the Organization of American States (OAS).

The IACHR's Office of the Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression has a broad mandate to monitor, protect, and promote the right to freedom of expression in the Americas.

During the visit, the Special Rapporteur will meet with government authorities from the three branches of government, journalists, media representatives and academics.

The purpose of these meetings is to evaluate the situation on the ground with an intersectoral approach that will allow the issuance of a special report with recommendations on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of expression in Peru.
