Peru's FA Min meets with U.S. Undersecretaries of State

Peruvian Foreign Affairs Minister Oscar Maurtua held a meeting with United States Under Secretary for Political Affairs at the Department of State, Victoria Nuland, and Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, Brian Nichols.

The topics discussed were mainly the bilateral agenda, cooperation to face the COVID-19 pandemic, economic reactivation, as well as the importance of promoting and defending democracy.


In particular, emphasis was placed on advanced efforts in a coordinated manner in the fight against drugs, as well as the signing of the recent Cooperation Agreement with USAID in favor of development of the poorest populations.

Minister Maurtua reiterated the democratic vocation of the Peruvian Government, its commitment to the rule of law, and the importance of relying on clear and transparent rules.

In this regard, the Cabinet member highlighted the need to work together with a view to a post-pandemic economic recovery, promoting quality trade and investment between both nations, in favor and with special attention to the poorest citizens.

During the dialogue, the urgent need for a decentralized and democratic global vaccine production system was also underlined.

In this sense, U.S. officials stressed the importance of relying on the necessary framework to boost its production in different regions of the world, such as South America, which could include Peru.

Furthermore, ideas were shared on tax reform with macroeconomic stability, digital government, promotion of quality investments, the relaunch of dialogue systems between both governments, as well as the strengthening of various multilateral forums and mechanisms.

The event took place within the framework of the 76th UN General Assembly.
