on Tuesday reported that Peruvian exports reached US$5.646 billion in October 2023 —a 6.4% growth compared to the same month of the previous year.
Thanks to this increase, Peruvian shipments to foreign markets grew for the second consecutive month. The important news allows for foreseeing positive behavior for the remainder of this year.
"Last October, exports grew due to greater sales of metallic/non-metallic minerals (+13%) and agricultural goods (+17%)," the government official indicated.
Referring to trading partners, Minister Mathews pointed out that Peru-China trade reached US$29.551 billion (+1.9%) as of October 2023 thanks to greater exports (+9.9%), mainly of squid (+503%), lead (+83.2%), and copper (+17.1%).
For their part, exports to the United States grew 3.5% (US$7.173 billion) during the first 10 months of this year thanks to greater shipments of minerals (gold, copper, and molybdenum), hydrocarbons (fuel oil), and calcium phosphate.
January-October period
Between January and October, Peruvian shipments of goods to the world totaled US$52.456 billion (-0.1%), retaining the possibility of maintaining exports above US$63 billion.
Mining exports grew 11.7% until October due to greater sales of lead (+52.8%), molybdenum (+43.4%), anthracites (+28.9%), calcium phosphate (+27%), copper (+18.7%), and gold (+6.9%).
The climate alterations recorded this year affected important businesses such as flour and oil (fishing sector), as well as blueberries and limes (agriculture sector).
Thus, fishing exports fell 27.6% despite greater shipments of squid (+70.2%) in the January-October 2023 period.
Total agro-exports —traditional and non-traditional ones— fell 2.4% mainly due to lower sales of coffee (-44.5%, affected by price) and palm oil (-20.7%), despite higher sales of grapes (+30.3%), cacao/derivatives (+27.8%), and even avocados (+6%), whose value exceeded US$1 billion.
Exporting companies
Between January and October, sales abroad by 8,626 exporting companies were registered, 1.5% higher than those registered in the same period of 2022.
Of the total exporters, 2,551 placed agricultural goods abroad.
In the same period, 5,880 MSMEs sold products abroad, 2% more than in the same period in 2022.
MSMEs accounted for 68% of the number of exporting companies and 4% of the shipped value.
