National Para athlete Angelica Espinoza on Thursday became champion in Para taekwondo, thus granting Peru the first gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games by defeating Turkish Meryem Cavdar in the 44-49 kg category final.

Espinoza boosted in each of her kicks the strength of a country which had dreamed of a medal, that wanted to listen to its anthem on an Olympic or Paralympic stage.

Finally, she made that dream come true in the sweetest, most joyous, and desired way gifting Peru a gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

Thus, 22-year-old Angelica Espinoza joins the category that only Jose Gonzalez-Mugaburu, Maria Teresa Chiappo, and Jimmy Eulert had accessed.

She was only two years old when Jimmy Eulert achieved what had been —until moments ago— the last time that a Peruvian had claimed a gold medal at the Paralympics. He had obtained such award in Sydney 2000.

This is the ninth medal won by Peru in the history of the Paralympic Games.

This award was won in each training session, as she had key figures around her such as coach Yvonne de La Cruz and Delicia Paredes —a key piece in the Peruvian Taekwondo Federation.
