PeruRail reported that, on Monday, the operation of touristic train services would be carried out only on the Machu Picchu–Ollantaytambo route, with the aim of guaranteeing the departure of foreign and national tourists who are currently in the Machu Picchu district, so that they can return to their homes.
In this sense, PeruRail disclosed that the bimodal service will not apply, which means the Ollantaytambo-Machu Picchu route will not be operational.
Regarding the Titicaca and Belmond Andean Explorer service, the statement provides that both trains will carry visitors to Cusco city so as to facilitate the transit to the airport and —therefore— their return to their places of origin.
In the same way —starting tomorrow— all operations between Cusco and Puno, as well as of Belmond Andean Explorer on its way from Cusco to Lake Titicaca (Puno) and Arequipa —and vice versa— will be suspended.
Local train to be operational
Likewise, the local train will continue to operate as it is the only means of public transportation in the area, in order to continue guaranteeing
Machu Picchu residents and communities the development of activities permitted by the Supreme Decree, such as the provision of food and medicine, as well as access to health services, banking, and other essential goods established in the regulation.
In this sense, the ticket offices in San Pedro, Ollantaytambo, and Machu Picchu will continue to operate for the residents of Machu Picchu and the surrounding communities.
