Peru Women Min: Economic empowerment gives women chance to avoid dependency

14:37 | Lima, Jul. 10.

Women and Vulnerable Populations Minister Gloria Montenegro on Friday affirmed that women's economic empowerment is the backbone of her sector's management, and the private sector is a strategic ally in this cause.

"Now, our backbone is women's economic empowerment at all levels and regions across the country, under all the systems we can create," the Cabinet member expressed.

"We cannot work on this without integrating education, health and culture sectors. Besides, we must incorporate private companies as strategic partners and allies for this great change we pursue," she added.

Montenegro believes that —in addition to trying to stop violence against women— they (female citizens) must be empowered to avoid dependency.

"If we only address the issue of violence, we will fall short. We must take a sober look at our work to avoid emotional but also economic dependency," she said.

The government official acknowledged that —in this context of emergency due to the pandemic caused by the coronavirus— the impact on women has been much stronger regarding access to work and undertakings.

"So, we have to find out a way to promote textiles and necklaces made by women in rural communities online and have them available for sale on social networks, as well," she stated.

Remarks were made in the webinar "Let's talk about governance. COVID-19 scenarios: Women in the workplace, an unequal relationship," held by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Ministry of Women and Vulnerable Populations (MIMP).
